Happy Day After Thanksgiving, also known as Black Friday. We’ll be celebrating here at Casa Aloha by staying home and not spending any money.
It’s been an awesome week though, with lots to feel good about today:
- We had a fantastic Thanksgiving! The weather was cool, overcast and windy, but we were able to make our second annual hike to the Pineapple Dump from Kealia Beach. After dinner we watched The Descendents, our favorite Thanksgiving movie.
- I didn’t overeat on Thanksgiving (in spite of that plate looking mighty full. It was my first and only meal of the day).
- Meiling celebrated Thanksgiving with her boyfriend and his family, and our son celebrated in Tokyo with some other American ex-pats.
- We spent less than $400 on our move (for van rental + tank of gas Saturday before last, movers for 9 heavy pieces last Saturday, and two extra tanks of gas for all the trips back and forth between houses each day).
- We all worked and cleaned out our old place last Sunday, and turned in our keys to our former landlord and got our deposit back on Tuesday.
- We put $31.01 in the change/$1 bill jar (over the last three weeks).
- WenYu was named as one of the co-captains for the swim team!

The Occasional Nomads 
Sounds like a fantastic week! Nick & I ran to Rite Aid yesterday & I finished the vast majority of my holiday shopping (gift cards :-)) & had a super fun, relaxing Thanksgiving. I’m grateful for only having to work in the morning yesterday, despite being on call all day.
It was also a great week for the boys (both had super, super strong soccer evaluations & got rave reviews on their development & leadership from their coaches). Congrats to WenYu!

Sounds like a great day yesterday – so happy for you that you were able to spend time with your family. I am almost done with my holiday shopping as well (yeah Amazon!) – it’s a good feeling.
The whole sports thing with our daughters is new for us. Neither our son nor Meiling were interested in sports in school or otherwise (our son did play soccer for a couple of years but didn’t really care for it 😦 ), but WenYu and YaYu have greatly enjoyed participating, at least at the HS level. WenYu in particular has shown real leadership skills, so it’s been great to see her rewarded and named a co-captain for two of her teams (very unlikely she will make captain for track though).

The weather has been awful all week, at least for those who wanted to spend time at the beach. I always feel so sorry for those who come for vacation and get a week like this past one, weather-wise.
I have heard nothing but good things about Adele’s new album. The girls love it.

You will have to add sticky rice to your holiday menu and really be a local.

LOL! We have sticky rice at least two to three times a week. Mashed potatoes and gravy was a treat!

So much to be thankful for – including health insurance!
Congrats to WenYu and I’ll be thinking positive thoughts for 1 December with scholarship results.

Definitely thankful for health insurance.
We have got all our fingers and toes crossed for good news on Tuesday, but it’s a very, very, very long shot. WenYu has said she is not expecting a match, and somewhat hopes she isn’t because there are other colleges she is interested in besides the ones she ranked for the match.
