Five Frugal Things 6/2/2017

  1. We signed up for the free trial for HBO on Amazon and watched movies that we’d otherwise have to pay to rent, then cancelled the subscription before we were charged.
  2. I made the first goal on Swagbucks every day in May, and will earn at least 300 bonus Swagbucks plus the daily lower goal bonus (I made the second goal on a few days too). I’m banking the Swagbucks I’m earning now – they will be turned into Amazon gift cards later and used to beef up our Christmas budget.
  3. WenYu picked up a second job as a part-time server at the restaurant where she worked last summer. The shifts there complement the ones at her other job, and provide big tips. She has enough in her savings to cover expenses this coming year, but wants to get a head start for the following year.
  4. We heard that we might possibly be able to get a better rate on our car insurance with another company, so we requested a quote. At first it looked to be lower than what we are paying now, but we did a  comparison with our current insurance, and discovered it was actually more per month with less coverage and higher deductibles than we have now. So, we’re sticking with our current insurance. We’ll still keep checking once a year though to make sure we are getting the best deal.
  5. We put $13.09 into the change/$1 bill jar: $8.09 in change from a trip to Costco last weekend, and $5.00 leftover from the farmers’ market.

What frugal wins did you have this week?

  1. We had a few frugal wins, and some fails as well last week. I did manage to sell our old TV for $200, and a kids table/chairs for $30. So, nice to have some money coming in as we paid for continued house stuff (pool heater this week).

    1. I don’t think your expenses for things like pool repairs are fails – they’re just expenses that have to be dealt with (i.e. like other household repairs, car repairs, etc.). No one wants to spend on those things, but they’re necessary expenses (even though unexpected).

Selling things here via Facebook and Craigslist takes way longer than it did back in Portland. It’s just the nature of living on a small island with a small population. Kind of frustrating, but it is what it is.

  2. If you get HBO again, or can find it elsewhere, I highly recommend their miniseries “Big Little Lies”. It starts off a little slow in the first episode but by the end you can barely wait to see it!

    1. Now I want to check and see if we can sign up for the free trial again (haha)! I have heard lots of good things about the show and would really like to watch it, but I guess we’ll have to wait until it shows up for free on Amazon or Netflix.

  3. YouTube TV seems to have a good rate with great selection of channels – so I hear. Might be something worth checking out. It’s new.
I have Wawanesa. Not sure if available in HI, but they have exceptional rates (I’ve been with the for 10 years.

    1. The girls use YouTube quite a bit – I haven’t heard much about YouTube TV. We have a smart TV so can stream shows/videos from YouTube.

I had never heard of Wawanesa for insurance. Apparently it’s only available in California and Oregon. We’re with USAA (military) – we have yet to find anyone who can match or beat their rates.

  4. Well, it’s been a decidedly NON frugal week here. My DH sold his sailboat last year, which was a huge savings, of course. But he has now gotten back into golf with a vengeance. I’m really happy for him, as he has reconnected with some old college buddies and is playing regularly and loving it. But alas, the savings I envisioned from getting rid of the boat have been eaten into by golf. It’s a lot cheaper pastime, but still. OTOH, he is 70, so it’s great he’s still active and healthy and what was he savings for all those years if he can’t enjoy life?

Luckily, my pastimes lately are much cheaper…gardening, biking, walking, reading, binge watching House of Cards. Ha!

    1. Golf is expensive! My younger brother was a PGA pro, and got to play and most of his gear, etc. for free because he said otherwise it would have bankrupted him. But yes, definitely less than a sailboat. My sister-in-law and her husband own a BIG sailboat, and I cannot believe what they spend on that thing (actually, right now they’re prepping it for sale – they want to get it off the books).

70 and healthy is the way to be, and if golf is what keeps your husband healthy then it’s worth every penny.

I’ve recently heard that House of Cards is a little to close to reality these days. We watched it in the past, but didn’t pick it back up again. Right now we’re watching Fargo – yowza!

      1. Your comment re: sailboats reminded me of my DH’s favorite saying: The two best days are the day you buy the boat and the day you sell it. Since I’m not a big sailor, I much preferred the day it sold. 🙂

      2. I’ve been sailing once, and thoroughly enjoyed it until the wind died and we bobbed around in the water for over an hour – I got miserably seasick. So, not my favorite thing to do.
