Even More Clues!

We are not going to Iceland.

Back in May, I posted the following clues about our upcoming Big Mystery Adventure™, which will be beginning in less than a year (!!):

  • We will be leaving right after we take YaYu to college in 2018. Depending on what school she ends up attending, that could be in either August or September.
  • We will be taking at least four plane flights after we leave YaYu.
  • The trip will cost more than $7000, which is our travel  savings goal for this year. We haven’t set a firm goal for next year but will be saving all we can before departing.

There are other clues from previous posts in the blog:

  • We will be needing large suitcases versus traveling with carry-on only.
  • We will be transitioning seasons.
  • The word BIG is in the name.

But it’s time for a few more clues:

  • We’ll be traveling for more than a couple of months.
  • We’ll be bringing our passports.
  • We’ll be visiting family.
  • Our lodging will primarily be Airbnb rentals.
  • We’re taking one organized tour.
  • We’re taking one scheduled railway excursion.
  • Don’t forget the word BIG!

We still can’t reserve flights or lodgings until we know where and when YaYu will be going to college, but it’s looking more and more like we’ll be beginning our adventure in late August of next year. The itinerary is pretty much solid now – we just may need to wiggle some dates once we know when the journey will begin.

I’m ready to reveal all now, but Brett wants to hold back and make sure a couple of things are firmly in place first, so I will bow to his wishes and stick with our plan to tell all after the first of the year.

In the meantime, any guesses?

    1. Hmmmm – this is an interesting idea! There is a train that crosses Australia, and Brett’s always wanted to take that trip. Sadly, the trip from Australia to Tokyo is just as long as it is from here. It seems like it should be closer though, doesn’t it?

    1. This has been one of our goals for a while, to do an extended stay in Japan every year so that we can spend a good block of time with our grandchildren. The biggest downside is finding an Airbnb rental that we can afford for a long-term stay – Tokyo is expensive!!

  1. No clue, but I will be interested to hear more about the modes of travel and if you have ever been there before. BIG- I am stumped.

    1. It really is going to be a BIG trip for us, something we’ve never done before. Other than visiting family and one other exception, neither of us have been to where we’re going.

    1. This is funny – when I reread my post the first thing I thought was, “sounds like we’re going to Canada!” Maybe we are, maybe we’re not – that’s all I can say for now.

      1. Taking the train to Churchill involved? Polar bears, then off to Quebec (hence the other language). If it is, hopefully the track will be repaired by then. The company that owns the track isn’t balking at fixing it. Government is getting involved now though. Hoping it’s fixed for Churchill. Their main way of getting supplies.

    1. No, we can fly direct to the Big Island from here. We do need to get over there though – we both want to see Volcano National Park, and visit Hilo.

The long stay has been part of our plans for a while – we can stay up to 90 days without a visa. Finding affordable lodgings for that long a stay though is the challenge (our son’s condo is still too small).

    1. We’d love to take a journey on the Orient Express – it’s not as expensive as I thought (although not all that cheap either). They don’t do the long trips any more though – most are just short overnight journeys it seems (and those run around $2600 per person).

Even if we saved enough for one of those, I don’t think we could afford the wardrobe – it’s very dressy.

    1. Wonderful guess! However, as much as Brett loves trains and train travel, Russia is w-a-y down on the list of places we want to visit.

    1. I would love to visit SE Asia, and there are some great rail trips through the area. But . . . it’s very hot and humid there, so not my first choice. Brett has been to Thailand and Singapore and enjoyed both – I think he’d like to go back.

    1. Great guess! However, as much as we want to visit Alaska it’s not on the itinerary this time. We are hoping to take the inland ferry from Seattle up to Anchorage one of these days, with all the stops along the way.

    2. No, not California, although we had originally been planning to make a California trip this fall, during YaYu’s fall break, with visits to Yosemite National Park and San Francisco. Another time . . .

  2. Let’s see….you are checking bags and transitioning seasons, this means northern hemisphere.

You have been studying a foreign language, so English and Japanese are both out.

Four flights: 1) from YaYu’s college to the location 2)then back to USA 3)then Honolulu 4)then Kauai

I’m thinking Europe – a classic “Grand Tour!” Or Turkey, which is technically Asia, shoot it is called Asia Minor….okay now I’m just guessing so I’ll stop 🙂

Can’t wait for the BIG reveal!

  3. I’m thinking China, mainly due to the great wall of china and because your girls were adopted from there.

    1. We love China! We visited Beijing when we traveled to adopt YaYu, and got to walk on the Great Wall then, something a young me never thought could ever happen. All three of the girls have been back to China at least twice. There are loads of things there we haven’t seen though, and the food . . . .
