- I found a great pair of traveling shoes on Zappos, exactly the color and look I have been wanting. The Zappos sale price was $57, and with tax the order came to $59.37 (shipping is free). My one concern was that Zappos only had them in medium width, and I have more of a wide foot. Later that day though I was canoodling around on the internet and found the same shoes on sale at Overstock.com, for just $44.21! Even with shipping the total came to just $49.16, ten dollars less than Zappos. And, best of all, the shoes from Overstock are wides – score!
- Thanks to some low-hanging, moist clouds that didn’t want to move, last weekend was particularly humid, and after our early evening walk on Saturday I really didn’t feel like cooking. Anything. We decided to get take-out, but then checked the fridge once more and decided we could eat leftovers after all, saving us $$.
- Brett and I went up to Hanalei for a planned lunch date on Tuesday, and although there is something like a zillion shops in town, most of them are geared toward tourists so we only spent our $$ on lunch, coffee, and a biscotti for Brett. Our meal provided leftovers that we brought home and Brett and YaYu enjoyed for lunch the next day.
- We don’t use coupons, but because we primarily shop at Costco we pay close attention to their monthly sale flyers and always find things on our list among their offerings (although we won’t buy something just because it’s on sale). This week we saved $3 on (another) bag of LingLing potstickers – they are eaten regularly here, and we’ll need plenty at Christmas when all the girls are home – and we also got $3 off Brett’s favorite Dare crackers. We also saved $8 on a box of Brita filters for our water pitcher. We signed up in the store to receive alerts on recalls, and received a $2 off coupon on any fruit we bought that day (pears!). YaYu is almost out of vitamins, but rather than buy them this week, we’ll do it next week when they go on sale, saving an additional $3.50 on those. It’s not a huge amount of savings, but every bit helps.
- We put $31.20 in the change/$1 bill jar this week: $1.73 change from the electric bill, $2.60 from recycling, $2.00 from the farmers’ market, $24.56 left over from the Big Shop, and we found 31¢ on the ground.

The Occasional Nomads 
We live by Costco savings, both in general and whatever coupon sales are on. This week I stocked up on paper towels and Kleenex to tide us over the holidays when our family visiting will increase our usage. I try to only buy when the coupon sales are on, since every little bit helps. They also had some low sugar tart cherry spread that we both like in oatmeal and yogurt all year. It’s only there periodically, so we stocked up. Cheap and delicious.
Apples are one of our favorite fruits and Michigan apples are in the stores right now for 79 cents/lb. Needless to say, we’re eating a lot of them. And I made homemade applesauce this week instead of buying it. Tastes better and so much cheaper.
Found laundry supplies in my closet saved from our last trip to Europe…travel clothesline, flat packets of Woolite detergent, sink stopper. They don’t go bad. 🙂
Will be taking my tiny hotel tubes (from previous trips) of lotion, etc., and samples gleaned from other spots for many of my toiletries. The foil packets don’t have to be in the quart bag. Win/win.
DH found Purcell and Clorox wipes in travel sized packets for $1 each last week. We’ve both been sick in the past few weeks and intend to wipe down our tray tables and arms on the flights as we’ve read that’s where most germs lie. (I know…we’re a little germ phobic. Especially me.)

Lots of worthy frugal savings for you! I am especially intrigued by the tart cherry spread you found at Costco – I’ve never seen it here, and I love cherry things (except for cherry “flavored” things, like cough drops or candy or medicine. Ugh. I’d rather be sick). Our Costco has unfortunately run out of my favorite frozen organic cherries – hopefully it’s not a permanent thing. I love apples, and we buy them here, but they’re so expensive compared to what we paid back on the mainland.
I love that you’ve found all sorts of things around the house from previous trips that you can use on this one – the perfect way to save. We always grab the tiny tubes or bottles of toiletries from hotels where we stay and use those again when we travel.
I know you’re leaving soon – have a wonderful time! I’m envious, but we have our big adventure coming up next year!

A little different category, but we cancelled two streaming services within the last week. SInce the Arizona Diamondbacks season is over we didn’t need Sling TV to get Fox Sports….$25/month.
We have seen most of the newer shows we like on Britbox, the British streaming service. Those that were left were very dated 60’s and 70’s crime or mystery shows….$5/month
$30 a month back into the pocket!

We examine our streaming services and cable every year and decide whether they’re worth keeping – we have Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu along with basic cable (which costs just $10/month on top of our Internet service). So far we’ve been happy with all of them so nothing’s been dropped. We tried to add Britbox, but even our technological savant daughter couldn’t get us connected here. Apparently it’s a Hawai’i thing (more likely a Kaua’i thing). We would love to have it, or Acorn TV.
Even if it doesn’t seem like much, all the little savings can add up to big savings for the things we value and want to do.

Nice work! The weather in Maui was gorgeous (but hot) & the best it’s ever been for one of our vacations. So, so beautiful.
I got the $2 coupon at Costco (in Maui) as well, but didn’t have any produce to offset. I”ll try to use it here and see if they accept it. We did as much as we could to keep the vacation costs down, but eating out definitely adds up!

So glad to hear you had a wonderful time on Mau’i. Other than last weekend, it has been a good week weather-wise. Very breezy and cooler, and much, much nicer than the horrid humidity we had been experiencing. We’ve been walking down by the beach every day and it’s been very nice (if not a bit windy at times).
I don’t think there is an expiration date on the Costco fruit coupon, but the sign-up to get the coupon ended on Wednesday. I don’t know though – we used ours on our Big Shop.
