Afternoon Tea Giveaway

There to seem to be more than a few blog giveaways going on right now (Don’t Read This; It’s Boring and One Hundred Dollars a Month just announced giveaways this week, for example) so here’s one more you can enter!

This Afternoon Tea giveaway includes a lovely blue and white porcelain heritage mug from Oxford and some Scottish shortbread from Edinburgh as well as a box of PG Tips tea bags. The mug is decorated with images of some of the famous buildings at Oxford University and is rimmed with gold; the shortbread is handmade from a traditional melt-in-your-mouth butter recipe.

To enter, please comment on this post only, with one entry per day permitted. Leave at least one comment telling me about one of your favorite travel tips. Another one-time extra entry can be earned if you’re already a follower of The Occasional Nomads, or if you become a follower of the blog – leave a comment and let me know. One more one-time entry can be earned if you mention the giveaway in your own blog; again, let me know in a comment.

The giveaway will be open through midnight PST Friday, November 29 (the day after Thanksgiving), with the winner chosen by a random name selector and announced on Sunday, December 1. I will contact the winner to get your address and mail your package out a couple of days later. I can only accept entries from the U.S. and Canada as overseas postage is prohibitive.

Thanks for entering!

  1. On the airplane rides, along with staying hydrated with lots of water, avoiding caffeine and alcohol I use Vaseline on the inside of my nose to help keep from getting a cold and I wipe down anything I may touch with an anti bacterial wipe. Germaphobe? Maybe, but this has been working for me as I used to always end up getting sick.

  2. Oh, how I love tea! What a wonderful gift giveaway idea. There is nothing better than a cozy cup of tea on a cold, blustery day! My travel tips center around simplicity. I like to take one carry on and one backpack that can be used for day trips. Pack clothes that can be layered easily and are quick drying…I am finding athletic wear make great wardrobe staples and wicks away moisture for more travel comfort. For lightweight mementos of my travels I enjoy buying interesting postcards and placing them in baskets when I get home. I also use them for bookmarks and love the daily reminders of what I have seen and experienced. I enjoy picking up tea towels and earrings for gifts for my friends. Again, lightweight and easy to pack. Thank you for taking the time to write your blog and sharing your experiences and expertise with all of us. I really connect and enjoy hearing of all your travels…I studied in England in the 80’s and returned this spring to visit my daughter at her University in Scotland. We were able to travel up to the Highlands all the way down to the Cliffs of Dover in England…it was so much fun. We are in the process of moving to the beautiful island of Hawaii where we will be closer to some of our dream travel destinations. We look forward to traveling and seeing more of the world now that we are retired. Thanks again for sharing your travel wisdom.

  5. This only works when I visit my sister in Portland – but bring just a few things in a backpack. I use all her bathroom stuff and wear her clothes. Bonus – she has a shopping problem and let’s me have anything I’ve worn. 😁 This means I have to check a bag on the way back but worth it.

  6. Another good travel tip is to stay hydrated. I almost always choose Tomato juice on the plane. I rarely drink it at home but it always seems like a refreshing and healthy option on the plane.

  9. Happy Sunday from the V&A Museum London! I follow you on Imstagram and read your blog regularly.

Today’s tip: I picked up a sandwich at Pret today on my way to the V&A. Only needed to get veg at the cafe for a nice and not so pricey lunch.

  11. Have safe travels-I have really enjoyed reading about your British journey! A tip for the airport in San Francisco-see if any of the food purveyors have loyalty programs. Peet’s is out that way and it appears that they give you a freebie after your first check-in.

  15. When taking an overnight flight – or a really long day flight – I pack a clean, damp, inexpensive washcloth in a plastic ziplock bag in my carry on bag. It feels heavenly to wash my face and neck thoroughly when I arrive. It goes into the first load of laundry that I do or if needed an be tossed (but I rarely have to do that).

  16. Husband and I have done a great deal of traveling in the last ten years but we both feel two weeks away from home at one time is the most we can handle . I’m amazed at you two.

My only travel tip is to remember to plan your arrival time on an overseas flight carefully. More than once we have arrived in the early hours of the morning to be told by our hotel that check in time was not until early afternoon. We were completely exhausted and had to wander the city to kill time when what we desperately wanted was a bed.

  17. Before I leave where I’m staying to begin a trip, I count my “tote-ables.” For example: 1. coat, 2. suitcase, 3. purse, 4. backpack. During my travel day, before I move from any place I’ve stopped (ladies room, taxi, etc.) I always count to make sure I’m not leaving something behind. This has saved me on several occasions!

  18. I would love to win the Oxford mug, the tea and the shortbread! Maaaany decades ago, I spent a semester in Oxford through my college. Oh, to recapture the sense of wonder and joy I felt when I arrived! It was my first time out of the US…I must have been like an oversized puppy dog lol.

  19. When I take a car trip, I always bring along a cooler. I have four different sizes! Sometimes I bring the soft-sided one cooler sized to hold a six pack, sometimes the soft-sided one that is the size of a beach bag, sometimes the hard-sided one that holds six half gallons of milk, and sometimes the mega-sized cooler.

Having a cooler allows me the flexibility to bring food from home, keep drinks and snacks cool, go shopping along the way, etc. I’ve found that healthier food typically requires cooling i.e., fruit, veggies, cheese, etc.

If I’m flying someplace and then traveling by car, I bring the small soft-sided cooler.

  20. I like buying small-sized travel souvenirs that I can use in my everyday life: Christmas ornaments like many have mentioned, dish towels, wooden spoons, cloth napkins, scarf, earrings, lipstick, etc. This way I’m not adding a “thing” to my life that doesn’t really have a purpose…..I have enough trouble with clutter 🙂
